Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Not sure what size or fit type you need?

Great fit and perfect for trip to Iceland

I shopped around for thermal base layer bottoms for a recent trip to Iceland. Every pair I tried was too loose in the legs and too tight in the waist. These fit perfectly, were very comfortable, and kept me nice and warm during my trip. Now that I have them, I'll wear them at home next winter too. I would just note that I would not wear these out in public without another layer over them (things were too visible...)

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Midweight Women's Wool Bottom Thermal Base Layer. We are thrilled to hear that you found the fit to be great and that it was perfect for your trip to Iceland. We understand the importance of finding the right base layer for colder climates and we are glad to have met your expectations.

We also appreciate your feedback about wearing another layer over the bottoms in public. Our team will take this into consideration for future product development. We hope to continue providing you with comfortable and warm options for your winter adventures.

Thank you for choosing our product and we look forward to serving you again in the future.

I had a pair of Minus 33 years ago and recently

I had a pair of Minus 33 years ago and recently reordered. The medium weight sz sm is a perfect fit for me. I also tried the Lt weight top and found it too small/constricting for me so I exchanged it for the medium weight sz sm which fit perfectly. Great product great people.
Will order more. Love this company.

Perfect for long legs and high waist. Great material fit texture, quality, and craftsmanship. Put first pair to the test ordered a second pair because I am so happy with the extra long length and quality of garment. I will definitely be ordering from -33 again specifically for their long length pants.

Such a good investment for the cold

Suuuch a good purchase! They're soft, stretchy, and warm. I get overstimulated wearing multiple layers and this has made it much easier to weather the colder days of winter this year. Highly recommend.

Very pleased, ordering more

As someone who is 5’9”, but on the smaller size, I have struggled for much of my life to find pants that fit my entire leg. Safe to say, these pants have allowed me to wave my struggles goodbye.

While they are slightly baggier in the groin area, I don’t mind because I’m just so glad to have something that fits the length of my leg.

Stretch too much

These are very well made and soft. I would totally love them if they didn’t stretch so much at the knees and become baggy after I’ve slept in them. They should stay next to the skin for the best warmth. Also the waist band is rather tight. I’m 5’ 8” 135 lbs and got a M

Great in an unheated factory

I work in a mostly unheated factory at the truck dock, so need a coat, hat and gloves at my desk. I got a pair of these and was so warm I got a second pair as soon as possible. The colors were also very rich and eye appealing altho no one sees them!

Terrible fit and reduced quality

Terrible fit. I have numerous pair of these wonderful leggings from years past but they have done something weird to the fit and reduced the quality this year. The elastic is so stiff it cuts into your skin and it’s very uncomfortable where it used to be soft. And the waist is so tight on my usual large I can hardly get it on yet the legs are still baggy. Have they just changed the tags on men’s garments and are selling the same thing as women's? Definitely not cut for a woman’s body any more. Even the fabric seems a bit cheaper this year. I had planned to buy several more but no way. Moving on to Ridge Merino and Ibex.

Weird fit: too tight AND too baggy.

The material is wonderful. The fit is terrible. I sized up because all the reviews said the waistband was tight. The fit on these needs to be re-thought. A woman would have to have the waist of a child and the hips of Beyonce to fit into these. The size xl waistband was SO tight. I normally wear a medium or large. But the crotch and legs were really baggy and uncomfortable because of the access fabric. I don't understand who these were designed for. Would it kill them to use a little more elastic in each pair?

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear you like the material, but we’re sorry to learn the fit didn’t meet your expectations. Your input about the waistband and overall design is very helpful and will be shared with our product development team as we continue to improve our sizing and fit.

Nice, but unwearable.

The fabric is beautiful and very high quality. However, I will sadly have to return these as the fit is not suitable to my body. There is too much fabric in the crotch, while the waistband is far too tight. They also sit at an awkward height and uncomfortably cinch in the belly.

Thank you for leaving a review for our Midweight - Franconia Women's Bottom! We're glad to hear that you appreciate the quality of the fabric. We're sorry to hear that the fit did not work out for you. We understand how important a comfortable fit is and we'll make sure to pass your feedback along to our design team. Good Insulation, Slightly Awkward Fit

I had my eye on these leggings for some time before I ordered them, appreciating the fact that they come in a long length. My measurements fall in between sizes so, using my experience with mid-rise running leggings, I chose the smaller size that fit my hips and hoped that they wouldn't come all the way up to the waist. When the leggings arrived and I tried them on, I realized several things: 1) These leggings are distinctly high-rise. 2) Being 100% wool, they have no spandex and don't hug your shape like other running leggings do; instead, the smaller size was somewhat loose on my hips and thighs. 3) The waist elastic, about 3/4 of an inch wide, does fit the measurements given. This makes for a somewhat uncomfortable fit at first, though I'm sure things will stretch out and get better. I would like to recommend that the designers think about a wider (1 1/2 - 2 in.), gentler waistband elastic, as it would be more comfortable for people in between sizes like me. Also, I was surprised to find that the leggings have cuffs at the ankles. I didn't notice that in the online photos.

Overall, I love the feel and cozy warmth of the fabric! I think the fit could be improved.

NOT cut for bodies

This was extremely disappointing esp. given how much I liked the fabric on this. It was substantial and the first merino sportwear fabric that has ACTUALLY regulated temperature in my body with dysautonomia. Unfortunately fit does not follow size guide and, like Icebreaker is also doing right now, the fit is enormous relative to the waist size (again, despite size guide indicating differently). No one with overall dimensions of these leggings has a waist this small. Any layer on the body should be comfortable, not restrictive, and if I went up two sizes (which is what I'd have to do for the right waist in this) or even one size, the rest of the piece would be so loose as to be unusable. These are NOT cut right for women's bodies. Returning and extremely disappointed. For those looking for something for themselves, my specifics are 125-130#, 5'5" 32w 41h 29 inseam and I ordered a L. That was my test order to see what sizes I should order going forward. Now I will be emptying the 20 items of Minus33 products from my cart because I see that despite the fabric quality, I cannot trust the size guide.

Lindsey,

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We apologize for your disappointment in the fit of our Midweight Franconia Women's Bottom.
