Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Why Merino Wool?

Moisture Wicking

Minus33 Merino Wool regulates the amount of moisture on your skin by absorbing any moisture or sweat on your body. Then, the absorbed moisture evaporates out of the fabric into the atmosphere.

Anti-Microbial

Merino Wool fibers naturally reject any bacteria in moisture or sweat as it is wicked away, so foot fungus and smelly odor will not be a problem while wearing our products.

Insulates When Wet

Wool will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet or clammy. If you do get wet, wool will insulate you better than cotton or polyester materials.

Fire Resistant

Merino Wool insulates against high temperatures and does not readily catch fire. If it does, it self-extinguishes. When Merino burns, it doesn’t melt and stick to the skin like synthetic fabrics do.

UV Protection

Don’t worry about sunburn on a sunny day summiting a peak. Lightweight layers have a UPF rating of 25. Midweight and Expedition have a UPF rating of 50+.

Renewable

Merino Wool has a low environmental footprint and naturally returns to the elements. Shear a merino sheep in the morning, and in the afternoon they’re happily nibbling their way towards renewing next season’s clip.

TOTAL EASY CARE

MACHINE WASH AND DRY

Total Easy Care (TEC) Merino apparel is designed for today's busy lifestyle. Total Easy Care Merino garments are all machine-washable, and are suitable for tumble drying.

Even after frequent laundering they retain an 'as new' appearance. They won't shrink, lose their shape, fade or color-bleed. They remain soft and comfortable for the life of the garment.

amazing

i spend a lot of time outdoors in the northeast, recreational as a cyclist and work wise.

as part of cold weather user demographic, minus 33 gear is top of the line for me. there seems to have been a lot of forethought and research and testing to go into this product. the 3/4th chugach thermal is a serious piece of equipment.

the thermal 'skin' almost has a thickness reminiscent of a wetsuit. the merino wool is light and moisture wicking in balmy warm weather up to the fifties or low sixties fahrenheit. the 3/4th's design also makes cooling and air flow to regulate body temps during strenuous activity or warm weather.

paired with thick padded hiking socks, the thermals make temps tolerable all the way down to bitter 20 degree F cold and wind chill.

for miserable wet, cold and windy conditions, these make the situation comfy. sleeping in them, you will really feel the soft stretch and thickness of the merino wool. although personally there is no guarantee you will not take them off in the night because they are THAT WARM. amazing product.

Even better than hoped for

Having been a skier for over 50 years, I’ve worn a lot of base layers and know of none other this heavy. When it is cold, this expedition weight is welcomed. Just wore these for two days skiing in New Hampshire. I was pleased in every way. Note: I’m unsure the fly is necessary.

Fly Navy,

Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our Expedition - Chugach Men's Zip-Off 3/4 Bottoms exceeded your expectations. Our goal is to provide high-quality and functional base layers for all types of outdoor activities. We appreciate your loyalty as a skier for over 50 years and are happy to hear that our expedition weight kept you warm during your recent skiing trip in New Hampshire. As for the fly, we understand your uncertainty. We will take note of this and consider it for future improvements. Thank you for choosing our product and we hope to continue providing you with excellent gear for your adventures.

Great garment with one suggested improvement

I am an avid outdoorsman living in Alaska. I have tried just about all of the insulating layers available in the U.S. and a few from Finland and Ireland. Minus 33 is my provider of choice. Their materials are first rate and the customer service is outstanding.

The Expedition 3/4 length zip off bottoms are well made and warm. Quality product like everything they sell. The one thing I would change with this garment is the direction of the zipper pull. The zipper, unzips from the top of the leg to the bottom. The advantage of this design is that you can unzip it part way like a shirt pit zip for ventilation.

For me, the garment will be in my backpack while hiking, then worn when not actively moving. If the zipper pull was the opposite direction, like zippered rain pants, it would be much easier to don the garment while in the field.

Hey Tom!
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a thoughtful review on the Chugach Bottoms! We are still a small company and we love hearing what our customers think. We will make sure the Product Development team know about your thoughts on the zipper.
