Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Quick change for comfort

These work great for a quick change without shedding layers. No more worries about getting cold, stiff boots back on after a layer change.

I want to be warm, but my socks are very pretty

Exactly what I needed for skiing. Boot cut at the right height. I used to have an amazing pair of wool knickers and these fit that gap. Note the dong peephole. You need an outerlayer to remain chaste.

amazing

i spend a lot of time outdoors in the northeast, recreational as a cyclist and work wise.

as part of cold weather user demographic, minus 33 gear is top of the line for me. there seems to have been a lot of forethought and research and testing to go into this product. the 3/4th chugach thermal is a serious piece of equipment.

the thermal 'skin' almost has a thickness reminiscent of a wetsuit. the merino wool is light and moisture wicking in balmy warm weather up to the fifties or low sixties fahrenheit. the 3/4th's design also makes cooling and air flow to regulate body temps during strenuous activity or warm weather.

paired with thick padded hiking socks, the thermals make temps tolerable all the way down to bitter 20 degree F cold and wind chill.

for miserable wet, cold and windy conditions, these make the situation comfy. sleeping in them, you will really feel the soft stretch and thickness of the merino wool. although personally there is no guarantee you will not take them off in the night because they are THAT WARM. amazing product.

Even better than hoped for

Having been a skier for over 50 years, I’ve worn a lot of base layers and know of none other this heavy. When it is cold, this expedition weight is welcomed. Just wore these for two days skiing in New Hampshire. I was pleased in every way. Note: I’m unsure the fly is necessary.

Fly Navy,

Thank you for your feedback! We're thrilled to hear that our Expedition - Chugach Men's Zip-Off 3/4 Bottoms exceeded your expectations. Our goal is to provide high-quality and functional base layers for all types of outdoor activities. We appreciate your loyalty as a skier for over 50 years and are happy to hear that our expedition weight kept you warm during your recent skiing trip in New Hampshire. As for the fly, we understand your uncertainty. We will take note of this and consider it for future improvements. Thank you for choosing our product and we hope to continue providing you with excellent gear for your adventures.

Great garment with one suggested improvement

I am an avid outdoorsman living in Alaska. I have tried just about all of the insulating layers available in the U.S. and a few from Finland and Ireland. Minus 33 is my provider of choice. Their materials are first rate and the customer service is outstanding.

The Expedition 3/4 length zip off bottoms are well made and warm. Quality product like everything they sell. The one thing I would change with this garment is the direction of the zipper pull. The zipper, unzips from the top of the leg to the bottom. The advantage of this design is that you can unzip it part way like a shirt pit zip for ventilation.

For me, the garment will be in my backpack while hiking, then worn when not actively moving. If the zipper pull was the opposite direction, like zippered rain pants, it would be much easier to don the garment while in the field.

Hey Tom!
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a thoughtful review on the Chugach Bottoms! We are still a small company and we love hearing what our customers think. We will make sure the Product Development team know about your thoughts on the zipper.

Love them!

These are great and serve the exact purpose I was hoping! I got them to be able to add and subtract layers under my waders without needed to take my boots off. The 3/4 length is perfect for this application because the bottoms of them don’t end up in my boots making them difficult to remove in the field. I pair them with knee high socks. I used them extensively on a recent hunt in Minnesota and was pleasantly surprised with how warm they are.

Leif,

I love these! I use them for the same purpose as you - to be able to add and subtract layers without taking my boots off. They're perfect for this application because the bottoms of them don't end up in my boots making them difficult to remove in the field. I love how warm they are, too.

Quality Zip Off Mid-Layer

Expedition Zip Off 3/4 Bottoms size: medium. My measurements: waist-32", hip-39", inseam-31". The mediums fit pretty good, a little tight through the butt and a little extra room through the waist. These pair great with a base layer and an outer layer. Very soft and very comfortable. The fly is superfluous, and they could use a bit more elastic through the waist to make them a little more snug for me; but I do have a narrow waist, so it might just be me. Highly recommend these to anyone looking for a quality mid-layer that is easy to get on and off in the field without taking your boots off.

Jeremy,

Thank you for the great detailed feedback on your Minus33 Chugach Expedition Zip Off 3/4 Bottoms! We greatly appreciate your feedback and I will be sure to let our product development team know of your request for more elastic through the waist!

Thank you for highly recommending this product and for supporting Minus33!

Great Baselayer

I love these! I wear them skiing and hunting. Super easy to shed a layer without having to take off boots.
I only gave it 4 stars because they are a bit heavier than I expected, and the waistband is bulkier than I expected.

Jeremy,

Thank you for the review! Great to hear you love our Chugach Men's Zip -Off 3/4 Bottoms.

Well worth the investment

I use mine for skiing and I cannot even begin to describe how well thought out these things are. I have to admit at first glance I thought the zip-off feature was a bit janky. But once I got them, I realized these things are the real deal. For starters, the build quality is top notch. From the stitching to the zippers even the tabs at the top...Seriously I don't know what this stuff is but it sticks to itself but doesn't stick to the wool, and if you've ever used Velcro around wool you know what a pain that is. No so here. As if that wasn't enough, they color coded each side to make getting things together just that much easier. The weight of the material is great; warm, without sweltering. I used these on a 5 degree day with 25mph winds and was very cozy. The length is great for not getting in the way of my boots, and the fact that they are a bit loose allows them to fit just over the tops of my boots for that little extra warmth. If I had one minor criticism, it would be the fly. Considering how these are being used, you probably could have saved yourselves the trouble, and gone without. But it certainly doesn't get in the way of anything.

Pros: Excellent materials. Perfect weight. Easy on, easy off. Built to last a long time.
Con(?): Unnecessary fly.
Conclusion: A great addition to anyone's cold weather gear.

Steve,

Thank you for the fabulous review and keep warm!

Finally!

I’ve been waiting a few years hoping someone would come out with these. I use mine for hunting and it makes such a big difference being able to add a layer and not have to take my pants or boots off. The zippers are very smooth and quiet. At first the Velcro didn’t look very good but it grabs like no other and it’s very quiet. Another outstanding product to add to my other 17 Minus33 products I own.

A game changer when hunting! Thank you for your review.

Been waiting a long time for something like this

Bottom line: I have yet to wear the Chugach Men's Expedition Zip-Off 3/4 Bottoms yet in the correct environment to test their warmth; I've only had them on the day they arrived to ensure they fit, which they did. The short time I did have them on they were very comfortable and upon closer inspection of the product I could tell they were of the highest quality. I'm 5'10"ish at 190 and the Large was a good fit. Follow the recommended fitment- they are a bit stretchy as I expected them to be. I look forward to putting them to the test this November during the West Virginia Antlered Deer Rifle season. I will update after that to give a more in depth field review.

But one may ask why I've been waiting for something like this as a title to my review. Way back in 1996 when I was a much younger Soldier I was attending the US Army Ranger School during the winter. Believe me it gets really cold in northern Georgia in the winter, especially if your are pretty much living outside 24/7 and not getting much to eat and little sleep. A number of my fellow Ranger students had brought with them modified USGI Army brown polypro trousers that had been modified with hook and pile tape (Velcro in the civilian world) along the outer seams much like the Chugach bottoms have the zippers. They made life for those Rangers much better than those that did not have them- we didn't always have time to don and doff long underwear before each stop or movement especially taking boots off and putting them back on to facilitate long underwear changes. I toyed with the idea of making a pair myself after returning to Fort Drum, NY but just never took the time.

Similar situations occur in the hunting woods where the morning starts really cold but by noon it has warmed and you no longer need the layers and not many hunters want to remove boots to remove layers. These are a welcome addition to my layering clothing. I look forward to many years in the field with these. Thanks Minus33 for a great product that I've been looking for over many years.

These will make dropping a layer as it warms up so convenient. Thank you for the great review.

J
JimG G.

Any chance you'll be doing a 3/4 zip off in a midweight? If it is cold enough that I need expedition weight thermals, I'm not likely to be completely stripping that layer, even if I am moving. A midweight product would be fantastic!
