Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Why Merino Wool?

two people sitting next to a river wearing merino wool

Moisture Wicking

Minus33 Merino Wool regulates the amount of moisture on your skin by absorbing any moisture or sweat on your body. Then, the absorbed moisture evaporates out of the fabric into the atmosphere.

Anti-Microbial

Merino Wool fibers naturally reject any bacteria in moisture or sweat as it is wicked away, so foot fungus and smelly odor will not be a problem while wearing our products.

Insulates When Wet

Wool will absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet or clammy. If you do get wet, wool will insulate you better than cotton or polyester materials.

Fire Resistant

Merino Wool insulates against high temperatures and does not readily catch fire. If it does, it self-extinguishes. When Merino burns, it doesn’t melt and stick to the skin like synthetic fabrics do.

UV Protection

Don’t worry about sunburn on a sunny day summiting a peak. Lightweight layers have a UPF rating of 25. Midweight and Expedition have a UPF rating of 50+.

Renewable

Merino Wool has a low environmental footprint and naturally returns to the elements. Shear a merino sheep in the morning, and in the afternoon they’re happily nibbling their way towards renewing next season’s clip.

TOTAL EASY CARE

MACHINE WASH AND DRY

Total Easy Care (TEC) Merino apparel is designed for today's busy lifestyle. Total Easy Care Merino garments are all machine-washable, and are suitable for tumble drying.

Even after frequent laundering they retain an 'as new' appearance. They won't shrink, lose their shape, fade or color-bleed. They remain soft and comfortable for the life of the garment.

Really nice shirt.

I’ve worn the shirt regularly the last few weeks while deer hunting in Indiana. It’s comfortable and warm. I’m 5’10 205 and I bought a large. It fits well.

Eric,

We're so glad to hear that you're enjoying the Expedition - Yukon Men's Crew 100% Merino Wool shirt! It's great to hear that it's been keeping you warm during your deer hunting trips in Indiana. Thank you for sharing your height and weight, as it can be helpful for other customers when deciding on the right size. We hope you continue to love the shirt for many more adventures to come. Happy hunting!

Quality base layer, just wish they were made in NH

I'm a rescue specialist working in a coastal offshore environment. I purchased the Yukon and Katmai base layers primarily to wear under my drysuit during winter operations.

The good - The garments themselves appear to be good quality. The stitches and seams are neat, tight and free of frays. The material is thick, heavy, warm, very soft and comfortable. Definitely a good choice for my needs.

The bad - A very personal gripe about the company not the garment - As a proud Granite Stater, I want to support local business. So after some research I went with minus33. From my initial research I mistakenly thought the wool was imported from Australia, and the material and garments were spun and produced in NH. I was disappointed when I received my order both garments had "made in china" printed on the inside collar. After findings this, I did some more digging and discovered under transparency only some of their socks are made in NH. Still supporting a local business, I just wish more of their sourcing and production was based in the US.

Christopher,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. It's great to hear that the Yukon Men's Expedition Crew was a great choice and is working well for your needs as a rescue specialist.

We apologize for your disappointment in the country of origin for the Yukon Crew. We have moved some base layer manufacturing out of China, like our best selling midweight crew for ladies and men Into Bulgaria.

With that said, Here is some brief history of our company that may provide some insight into why we source some of our products abroad. The parent company of Minus33 is L.W. Packard, a textile company created by our current president's great-great-grand-uncle in 1916. We were able to successfully run this textile mill for 86 years until, in 2002, the politics of globalization caused our president's father to finally go out of business as one of the last textile mills in America. He had to let go 300 employees, most of them friends and family that he grew up with. After that, he started a 100% merino wool base layer company which is now the Minus33 you know today.

Over the past few years, we have purchased several sock knitting machines and set them up in Ashland NH on the historic grounds of the L.W. Packard Mill. We learned how to operate these machines and designed the Mountain Heritage Collection of USA-made socks by Minus33. This sock line consists of three different weights of socks, in seven heights, four sizes, and five colors. Recently, we also purchased two new sock machines to help expand the sock variety into two additional categories. These new socks will be coming in the near term. Additionally, we are looking at purchasing machines that can produce hats and gloves in our mill in the coming years.

Rebuilding USA manufacturing is a very difficult process due to the trade laws put in place several decades ago, and we expect it to take time, but we assure you that we are working on it. We ask that if you feel strongly about bringing back production to the USA please contact your local reps and let them know that you're interested in seeing less globalization and more American-made products.

Best,

Just Excellent!

I purchased this top about 18 months ago as a mid layer while backpack hunting. I have found it to be a superior base layer, mid layer and outer layer to any of my other wool or synthetic pieces. I now wear a lightweight wool base layer and this as my mid layer instead of the Polartech fleece half zip that I had been wearing. As a mid layer, I immediately realized how much better temperature regulation and moisture management this shirt provides instead of the fleece. During high exertion I sweat less and when I do sweat, it dried more quickly. I just feels less stuff than any fleece. When I do sweat, the shirt stinks less than any other synthetic as a bonus. I have now completely abandoned fleece in any part of my layering system. On a recent trip to Central Asia, I used this shirt as a base layer, a mid layer and an outer layer. I was impressed with the durable nature of this shirt and how little it itches compared to other wool brands I've used.

If I could have anything I wish for, I would have a crew neck or mock neck shirt made of this material with a 1/4 zip and some sort of kangaroo pocket. The kangaroo pocket would have to have some kind of lightweight material against the body to prevent the double layer of this wool from becoming too hot. Until then, I'll use this shirt outside any time the temperature is below 60F.

Thanks for making a great product. I can say it is absolutely worth the expense!!

Richard,

Thank you for giving us your detailed feedback on your Minus33 Yukon Men's Expedition Crew. As a personal favorite of mine as well, it's great to hear that you enjoy the quality, performance and versatility that the Yukon offers.

I have also forwarded your suggestion for a crew neck or mock neck shirt made of our expedition fabric, with a 1/4 zip and a version of a kangaroo pocket, over to our product development team to be considered for the future.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave us such a great review.
