Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Pricy, warm, and comfortable

Pricy but warm and comfortable.
I'm trying this because I've been unhappy with durability of the mid-weight equivalent. I hope I agree with my 5-star rating in a year.
I have long arms and usually need to buy a tall, but the sleeves on this are perfect.
One note - maybe it's a trick of my eyes, but the color dot for the navy is much darker than the actual garment. But the color in the larger pictures does match, so I wasn't surprised.

Nice heavy weight top and great fit. Thumb holes well constructed for outdoor use and indoor you just roll cuff up. I do a lot of fishing when it’s cold and this works great to keep me warm.

I am a tall woman, this is my second purchase of this shirt. I live in it all winter, farming, logging, wore the cuffs right out! Absolutely perfect, wish it were made in the USA, but I’ve tried others, and always return to this shirt. Cannot be beat

We are happy to hear that this has become a staple in your winter wardrobe and has withstood the test of farming and logging. We are glad to know that you find it to be the perfect shirt. We appreciate your feedback- thank you for your loyalty and we look forward to serving you again in the future.

Loving it!

Really enjoying my Kobuk 1/4. More versatile than I was expecting. Have worn it as a base layer sitting in the deer stand in the teens with wind, and as both a base and mid layer when hiking anywhere from 0 to -35. Fit is great and able to layer accordingly with it. Excited to play around with different layering variations next winter.

Hi there!

Almost indestructible

My several year old quarter zip mock t got caught by the lint filter in my dryer. It probably spun snagged by one sleeve for over an hour in a full dryer. It came out looking horrible, had a few small holes, and i thought i would be investing in another to replace it. On a whim, i ranit through the wash and threw it back in the dryer. When it finished it was back in its normal shape, with only a few small holes as a witness to its ordeal. Several years later I still wear it whenever it gets down near zero f. Same holes, same size, and as warm and comfortable as ever. Hard to believe, but true.

Dan,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Expedition 100% Merino Wool Kobuk 1/4 Zip. We are thrilled to hear that your quarter zip mock t proved to be almost indestructible, even after going through a tough time in the dryer. We take great pride in creating high-quality and durable products, and we are glad that yours stood the test of time. We hope you continue to enjoy its warmth and comfort for years to come. Thank you for choosing our brand and for sharing your experience.

Stay warm,

The Expedition Kobuk is a fantastic cold weather garment..can be used as a base layer or mid-layer insulating piece..soft and very warm..a formidable weapon against the cold...

What a surprise

The thickness was amazing yet it fit without binding under my outer layers. Fit was just what I wanted not baggy or too tight. Cuffs were snug but not constrictive.
They will get the first cold weather workout from the end of November through December.I am confident they will pass the test.

Mike!
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review! The Kobuk 1/4 Zip 100% Merino Wool is going to be a great insulator in the cold months!

Expedition 1/4 zip

I used as a base layer in Northern Montana when the temps dropped to near zero and a foot of snow on the ground. Stayed warm and comfortable with another mod weight minus 33 wool layer and outer layers. I am very glad I purchased before going on this trip. Can't recommend enough.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a great review of our Expedition 1/4 zip merino wool shirt! We are happy to hear that our gear was there when you needed it to stay warm and comfortable.

Do you have any plans to offer the 1/4 zip expedition in other colors? Albright (Glen Ellyn, US)
This 400gsm expedition is exactly what you are hoping it would be.

I've been switching over to wool and have tried ibex, smartwool, point6, and icebreaker gear in the 150-300 range. This 400gsm series is awesome. I ordered a medium and it would comfortably fit over a baselayer or could be worn as a baselayer just more of a loose fit (5'9" 150lb athletic). When you look at the material you'll understand why it's possible to dry it in a drier as it has a substantial heft and build quality to the knit. I'll probably still stick with air dry but I wouldn't worry if it got mixed in by accident. It's extremely soft yet robust for wool. The navy color looks far better than the picture as well and is a true navy in person. Of all the above brands the minus 33 definitely feels like it will hold up the longest by far and I look forward to getting additional wool products from them in the future. I wish they were available in store to try on which was the reason I delayed ordering so long as I prefer to test the products, but when forum posts from years back all the way to present still recommended minus 33 I figured it was worth a shot. Don't expect this to be thick like a fluffy hi pile fleece when it arrives, but do expect that it will be a nice soft and thick wool if you are more familiar with 250ish grade material.

Dan,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a great, detailed review! We greatly appreciate your feedback. It's so great to hear that you enjoy our 400gsm fabric so much. The garments that are made in this fabric are my personally favorites for when we get the coldest temperatures of the year. The Kobuk is one of my favorites as well because it is so versatile and can be worn as a base layer or over another base layer like you mentioned.

Thank you again for your feedback and for your support of Minus33.

Absolutely Indispensable

I have been wearing Minus33 for over 6 years now-- until this purchase made direct from their website, all my others came from Amazon. All of these garments are the heavy expedition types and all are men's even though I am a senior age woman. I am outdoors every day in winter to care for animals; but the main reason I bought these items are to wear inside under my clothing because I have baseboard heat and I keep it on the lowest setting when I have to have it on at all. I live in eastern USA in mountainous region and the climate can be quite cold at times.Throughout my lifetime I have purchased cold weather gear from at least 5 of the major brands of cold weather gear. Minus33 is my favorite, in spite of the high prices. I own just about every piece they make, including socks and hats. I have the hooded jacket and two pairs of the pants and tops. I love the 1/4 zip tops. I have washed and thrown the garments into the dryer as well as drying them on the line. They hold up perfectly, including the stitching around the thumb holes, which has always been a disappointment from the other brands. They do attract pet hair, and I don't like that they are manufactured in China, except for the socks. But I consider them absolutely indispensable for my winter wardrobe and would buy again in a heartbeat.

Ruth,

Thank you very much for leaving us such an amazing and detailed review. It's the customers like yourself that make us great! I'd like to thank you for choosing Minus33 as your go to brand for your cold weather gear. It's great to hear that our garments keep you nice and toasty while you care for your animals during the cold winter months. As well as indoors, here in the eastern United States. We design our clothing to be able to be washed conveniently with the busy life styles of our customers in todays day in age and it's great to hear that all your garments have been a great example of this. A main goal for the future of Minus33 is to re-shore as much manufacturing as we can! Thanks again for the review!

Excellent heavy weight. Looser cut.

Very warm and seems to wick well. Higher quality that other companies I've seen. Would be too warm as an undergarment if active and it's over 20.

Hi Nicholas,
