Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Not sure what size or fit type you need?

Not that warm and short in back

I purchased a midweight pair of these years ago and still have them and they’re very comfortable so I thought I would try the heavy weight because I live in New York and it’s been 1° but these don’t feel very warm and I don’t have a huge butt but when I sit down they are too low in the back and uncomfortable. I’m 5‘6“ 159 pounds and I purchased the large which are like saggy pants. They don’t really fit underneath anything. Based on reviews it sounded like the medium would be too small. I am not happy and would like to return them.

my wife loves her Merino wool thermal base layers

my wife loves her Merino wool thermal base layers. Because of below zero temps she prefers her heavy weight items over the middle weight.

So WARM!

These are FABULOUS! I bought a small and a medium. I wear both layers (with my mid-calf height winter boots and short or mid-length down skirt) to do my farm chores at -38C, and my legs stay warm! Then when I come inside my house set to 20C, I'm still comfortable with both layers on. No more putting on and taking off snow pants that still let that cold sting get through! I just wish they came in more colors; I've got an abundance of maroon. I don't wear black or white due to all the dog and cat fur and dirt (in the summer). It's so hard to find 100% merino wool without 5% plastic thrown in.

Too heavy to wear under anything!

I’ve been buying minus 33 “heavyweight “ layers for over a decade. They used to be labeled 260 and were perfect to wear under everything. Very warm. This new 400 version is as heavy as sweatpants & can’t be worn under anything I own. Not sure what they were thinking but l can’t recommend them & I’m very disappointed that they’ve left us with these or the flimsier 200 weight layers. Bad decision! I gave them 2 stars because they’re well made.

Weird size/fit

Fits small in the waist and baggy in the thighs (unless that's your shape). I'm a 31" (natural waist) and 37" hip, and I didn't look at the size chart because I'm regularly a medium in bottoms (and a 6 or 8 in jeans), but sizing up to L wouldn't have really helped, because then the thighs would have been so baggy. Guess I'll have to redouble my efforts to lose the extra belly fat, because the waistband on these is strangling my belly. Other than that I like them, though they wouldn't work under dresses because of all the visible seams.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear the fit wasn’t quite right for you. We always recommend checking the size chart, as it gives the most accurate fit guidance- but we completely understand how frustrating it can be when your usual size doesn’t fit as expected. We appreciate you pointing out the issue with the seams as well; feedback like this helps us continue improving our products.

Warm! Tight calf and short length though

Warm baselayer. I had been looking for a sustainable heavyweight (400g/m2) wool base layer. So glad to find these! I love that they are mid-rise rather than high-rise; it's hard to find mid-rise fits anymore!

My only disappointment is that these run really short and tight in the calves with have very little stretch. I am only 5'5 and find these are about 2 inches too short. They are also unusually tight in the calf. Expedition girls have calf muscles ;)

For reference, I am 5'5', 120lbs, 26in waist, 34in hip, 28yo, and ordered the S.

Warm Warm

I know the expedition pants are a base layer. I have worn them by themselves on our cold and snowy days. They kept me toasty.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Expedition - Kenai Women's Bottom. We're so glad to hear that you've been enjoying the warmth and comfort of our 100% Merino Wool bottoms. They are designed to be a base layer, but we're happy to hear that they have also kept you toasty on those cold and snowy days! We appreciate your support and hope to continue providing you with quality products for your outdoor adventures.

Comfy and warm but very short

I have two pairs of the (size medium) Franconia mid-weight which I love, but wanted something a little thicker for extra cold days. I bought the same size (medium) in these. They're a good weight, but shorter in the waist AND in the inseam, and just made me mad every time I wore them. I gave them to my 13 year old son (5'1", 90 lb) and he loves them--they actually fit him about like the Franconias fit me (5'6", 160 lb). So 3 stars bc if they fit right, they're lovely, but without a way to predict that, I won't buy this style again.

Anna,

We appreciate your feedback on our Expedition Kenai Women's Bottom. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the sizing discrepancy you experienced. Our goal is to provide our customers with comfortable and high-quality products, and we regret that this was not the case for you.

We will take note of your comments and use them to improve our sizing chart for future production. We are glad to hear that your son is enjoying the bottoms, and we hope they keep him warm and cozy. Thank you for choosing our brand, and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you better in the future.

Best regards,

Love these winter warmth leggings!

I buy a couple pairs of these every few years and wouldn’t be without them, especially for exercise classes and riding my bike. They do eventually wear thin on the bum due to the latter but I’m not deterred because for comfort, fit and warmth they can’t be beat!

I’ve had the same pair for about 8 years. They are by far the best wool tights I’ve owned. They last and are nice and thick and not itchy . I’ll be buying again when one day.

Go to bottoms year round

Have been wearing these 400 weight expedition bottoms for 15 years or so.

They work for me in 3 seasons and in many summer mornings and evenings as well.

I basically live in them most of the time. Cannot overstate their value to me in almost all conditions. If you know wool. You will probably understand.

Love but…

I love the weight and fit of the Kenai however they wear out in the crotch area very quickly. I have a drawer full of them in excellent shape except holes in the crotch. I just threw them all out in my New Year cleaning…ca Ching

Would be great if...

Would be great if the seams weren't starting to unravel. Material is the softest Marino wool I have worn but after wearing these less than a dozen times and only washing 2 or 3 times, I noticed that the seam in the crotch is starting to unravel.
So now, I'll have to initiate the process of getting them replaced, which is a pain - especially during the coldest months of the year where I live.

The reviews I found most helpful when purchasing these were the ones that included body type as well - I'm 5'8" 150lbs and I have long legs. The fit are great for me for these as a looser/lounge or top layer pant.

Hi Cynthia,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We apologize for the disappointment that you have with your Kenai Expedition Bottoms. We will gladly initiate the return and replacement process right away, so that we can get you your new pair as soon as possible.

Please let us know if we can assist you any further by contacting customer service at 603-968-3351.

Great for base layer skiing

I bought these a few months ago and finally tried them out skiing as a base layer over silk long johns. It was zero out - and they did the job. I was warm all day, and I typically get cold in single digit temps while skiing.
Outstanding product.

Marie,

Great to hear our 100% Merino Wool Kenai Women's Bottom - Expedition did the job and kept you warm all day.
