Fit FAQs

What if I am between sizes?

If you are between sizes, we recommend sizing up or down based on what fit type you would prefer, and based on how you plan to wear the piece. Our knitted merino is stretchy and you could realistically go with either size. If you would prefer an Athletic fit, size down. If you prefer a Regular or Relaxed fit, size up.

Do I need to size up/down to layer?

Generally, no, you do not need to purchase a different size than normal. Our base layers are designed to fit right into your current layering system. They are also designed to work with other products in our line, too. You may wish to adjust your sizing if you plan to wear one of our garments in a way that it is not intended, if that's the case please feel free to contact our customer service team for help.

Does your clothing run true to size?

Yes, our clothing runs true to size and is sized similar to most other American brands. If a sizing discrepancy is discovered, you will see fit advice in that product's specific listing.

Looks great for dress up, wear it with a vest, or great to unzip and enjoy a cool weekend. This shirt is good for cool to cold weather, and is my favorite long sleeved shirt. The weight is really good, it doesn’t wrinkle or smell bad after repeated wearings, it is super soft, and the length is great for me. I’m 6’1”, 180 lbs., and I wear a large.

My favorite cold weather shirt

The midweight 1/4 zip is comfortably warm, soft, versatile (I bought it for cold weather hiking, but wear it most often at home and for gatherings with my friends). It fits me perfectly & the Forest Green & the Burgundy colors are beautiful.

Tall guys take note.

I love this 1/4 zip! For tall guys out there, I am 6'6'' and weigh 245 lbs. I have purchased the Merino 33 tall XL in the past and it actually runs a little long, which is good. I thought I would try a standard XL for the 1/4 zip and it fits great! It is not as along as the XL tall but it really fits well. I would say it is also more like a 1/2 zip than 1/4 zip which makes it a perfect layering top for walking or hiking. You can un zip it to vent when you start geting warm. Love this product!

I cannot say enough about Merino33 and their products. I am slowly moving away from all of my synthetic cold gear and going to Merino wool.

This wool is soft and light

This wool is soft and light. It will be great for early season upland hunting as a top layer. It will be a great base layer later in the fall. The large size has a LONG torso, tall folks will enjoy tucking it in. The cut is more of a slim/sport cut, so go bigger if your chest/belly are on the larger side.

Warm, less itchy, but is overpriced considering its poor durability

It's warm for its weight and is less itchy than other merino wool garments, so I really want it to work. But the two I bought a year ago have small holes where my hip belt rubs. I wear a shirt or jacket, so the strap isn't directly rubbing against it. I got this one on sale and am giving them one last try.

Other brand merino tops I've tried aren't as comfortable—I'll admit to being sensitive—but they do wear better.

Like it very much, the tall size is excellent, soft wool feel. Dislike it was made in China.

This Midweight wool 1/4 zip shirt is perfect for PNW weather!

This Midweight wool 1/4 zip shirt is perfect for those chilly, windy, misty morning runs of the PNW! I ran with a moisture wicking t-shirt underneath and it was perfect for 40F weather, and I'm sure I would be comfortable running down to the 30s with the same set up.
This is my first product from Minus33 and I am impressed with the quality!
Highly recommended!

Very pleased with comfort and warmth

Very pleased with comfort and warmth. Probably could have ordered the heavy weight and wore less layers . But this one is just fine also. Would order again. The clothing feels thin but it provides the warmth as promised. So no bulk is a good thing.

Perfect Mid Layer for the Mountains

I wore the Midweight Men’s 1/4 Zip paired with the Midweight Men’s Crew and a light windbreaker for split snowboarding, and it was all I needed. Through changing weather and fresh snow, this layer kept me warm, dry, and comfortable without feeling bulky. It breathed well on the climb and kept in the heat on the way down. The ideal balance of warmth, performance, and simplicity.

Warm and quality. I believe the brand’s claim of warmth until 32F while inactive. 0F while active also seems easily feasible.

Mid-weight material doesn't last

Over the past several years I have purchased numerous mid-weight tops and bottoms. At first they were great. Warm, well fitting and comfortable. However, after a few washings (I did use the Nikwax wool wash) the material began to disintegrate on all my tops and bottoms. I haven't even worn them a lot, just for the few cold deer hunting days we get here in Georgia. I now have numerous random holes in all of them. Some holes big enough for my toe to fit through while putting them on. For the price they should last longer. I did contact Minus33 customer service and they ridiculously suggested I was wearing velcro next to the material.
The neck gaiters and gloves I purchased have lasted and I have had no problems with them. Seems to be a problem with the mid-weight material.

Summa **** Laude of Midweight Wool Base Layers

This latest addition to my Minus 33 collection reminded me of the first time I tried wool base layers.
It was another brand - big name. When they arrived, I held a meeting with them.
I paraphrased the promotion speech Lieutenant Jean Rasczak, from the Starship Troopers movie, gave to any newly promoted soldier: You’ve got the job until you fall apart, or I find something else.
They were midweight, but seemed lacking in warmth. I found them more lightweight for me.
A time later, I discovered Minus 33. Thought I'd try them (always looking to improve my gear).
After testing out Minus 33, I held another meeting with my first wool baselayers.
I announced I had found something else. The original wool baselayers needed to pack quickly, as I had booked them on a one-way flight to Whiskey Outpost, leaving in 30 minutes.

Dear valued customer,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review for our Midweight Isolation Men's 1/4 Zip 100% Merino Wool base layer. We are thrilled to hear that you have found our product to be the 'Summa Cum Laude' of midweight wool base layers.

We always strive to provide our customers with the highest quality products and we are glad to know that our base layer has exceeded your expectations. We appreciate your comparison to a popular brand and are honored to be chosen as your top choice.

We hope that our product will continue to keep you warm and comfortable during your outdoor adventures. Thank you again for choosing Minus 33.

I love the 1/4 Zip Midweight “Isolation” for my base layer top. It’s soft and warm and has a garage for the zipper pull to park in. I prefer the Minus33 Merino products over my Smartwool gear.
