Cold Weather Layers for Fall and Winter, Midweight and Expedition Wool Base Layers

A Simple Clothing System

The System

The main purpose of my clothing system is to have a few key items that can be used across a variety of environmental and route conditions. Mixing and matching these items allows you to carry only what you need for the location where you will be hiking.

Items 1 and 2: Hiking Shirts

The best way to choose these first two items is to consider the conditions and environment where you will be hiking.

If you expect dense brush, significant sun exposure, or cooler temperatures, consider a long-sleeve Merino wool shirt. For warmer temperatures where sun exposure is less of a concern, such as some portions of the Appalachian Trail, consider a short-sleeve Merino wool shirt.

The primary purpose of this layer is to help you remain warm in cooler temperatures and comfortable in warmer conditions. It does this by managing moisture and moving it away from your body.

Several fabrics can provide these benefits, including Merino wool, nylon, and polyester. Cotton does not manage moisture as effectively and can become cold and heavy when wet.

Fabric Breakdown

Merino Wool

Advantages

  • Naturally odor resistant and antimicrobial
  • Continues to provide insulation when damp
  • Effectively moves moisture away from the body
  • Breathable and temperature regulating

Considerations

  • May require more careful handling than some synthetic fabrics
  • Generally costs more than polyester or nylon garments

Polyester

Advantages

  • Generally affordable
  • Absorbs relatively little moisture
  • Can be lightweight and comfortable

Considerations

  • Can retain odors during extended use
  • May provide less insulation than wool in cold or wet conditions

Nylon

Advantages

  • Durable and abrasion resistant
  • Can provide protection from brush and insects

Considerations

  • Can absorb more moisture than polyester
  • May feel less breathable in warm conditions

Fabric Weight

Fabric weight is an important consideration when choosing the right shirt for your next trip. Your selection should account for your budget, the expected temperature, the fabric's durability, and how warm you normally feel during activity.

When choosing an item, determine whether Lightweight, Midweight, or Expedition Weight is most appropriate. As the fabric weight increases, the material generally becomes warmer and heavier.

This is a preview of my upcoming book for hikers, which will cover both gear and outdoor skills. This section introduces the first two items in my ideal clothing system.
